Radio's Impact in America - From WGN to Digital Era
Radio was one of many ways Americans used to receive news and information prior to the advent of digital technology. The radio provided an outlet for those unable or unwilling to use television and the internet.

Chicago has 20 radio stations which first began broadcasting on March 29, 1924.

Sears became a leader in radio with its Chicago headquarters, Homan Square and its mail order plant. WLS, or World's Largest Shop (WLS), was launched by the company to capitalize on its brand. WLS quickly became a major force in Chicago's market for radio.

Radio stations began to diversify their formats as the industry expanded. WLS moved away from its rural listeners in favor top-40. WCFL made the same change shortly thereafter. Both stations slowly lost their local appeal, as other stations tried to attract new audiences by changing their formats.

The 1980s saw the first FM stations appear on radio dials. They quickly became popular. As FM was more widely heard, it had a better sound quality. Talk programming, which was quickly a huge success on FM, brought radio back to its roots as a news and entertainment medium.

WGCI switched from a traditional format of news to a music outlet for adult contemporary. WVAZ merged into Clear Channel before becoming an AMFM.

WGN changed hands again in 1999 when it was acquired by Chancellor Media and converted into a news/talk outlet, discontinuing long-running morning program Eight Forty-Eight. WGN continued to be the market leader up until 2007 when it was sold by Nexstar.

Nexstar experienced a series of staffing changes after that transition. Bob Sirott replaced Steve Cochran in the morning drive, Bill Leff took over Wendy Snyder's midday duties, and Justin Kaufmann left Nexstar in the evening. Nexstar is focusing on recruiting new talent as it strives to stay competitive.
