Both the Q5 as well as the Q7 Max Series get very good scores in our floor tests that test for bare floors and are particularly effective in removing pet hair. However, they have a few flaws that keep them from being our top choice. One of them is that the Q5's navigation system does not have AI-powered obstacle avoidance, so it's prone to get caught up in shoes and socks and can't navigate rooms with a lot of people efficiently in our tests. It also doesn't have cameras that let it see the corners of an area.

It's still a good deal, especially if your office or home has a lot of bare floors and you're looking to save some money. It's also very quiet and you can use it while you're at work or school. The only thing it lacks that you won't find in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on floors that aren't clean. It's also less effective at mopping, using disposable wet wipes that don't stay on for long and don't take on dried-on debris. The Q5 is self-emptying cradle, however. If you need to, the mopping pad can be changed for a wet one in seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming into a sleek, compact package. Its intelligent cleaning maps as well as quick navigation make it easy to clean, and effective in tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also has self-emptying dustbins as well as powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the best robot hoover for carpets, although it's not as effective as some rivals in deep cleaning.

It did a great cleaning job on different flooring and rooms with different flooring types, including some area rugs. Its obstacle detection was top notch, and it nimbly avoided fake dog socks, turds, shoes and cables.

It's a bit more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but has superior suction and an onboard bin that automatically empties into the base. It also supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can even clean the floor after it vacuums, a feature that we've not seen on other robotic vacuum/mop combos.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

This mop and vacuum combination is sleek and has a circular design that appears much like a Roomba model than the bulky models from the competitors. It's one of our most appealing looking robot vacuums. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also the most intelligent. It comes with advanced features such as Enhanced Dirt Detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads in a self-cleaning manner).

It's also the sole robot vacuum or mop that scored the perfect 10/10 out of 10 in our testing. This is thanks to the combination of high-tech sensors including a structured light system, camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that can completely autonomously refill and empty its base station, and it boasts industry-leading 12,000Pa suction and self-cleaning mop pads.

Like other iRobot models, the X40 is user-friendly, with a simple mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only issue is that it's a noisy unit which could be a problem if you run it in the morning prior to work or at night as you attempt to sleep.

It's also somewhat expensive, but it's not as expensive as Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 MaxV Ultra Both of which are equally capable and better-looking. It's a dual-purpose vacuum that is very efficient however it's more expensive and make more noise.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a variety of sophisticated features to help you forget about your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning device that is similar to Ecovacs top-of-the-line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It features a multi-functional dock that can automatically emptys the bin of the vacuum and fills up the water tank, as well as washes and dries mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of LIDAR and structured lighting to map out floor plans and spot obstacles. It navigates more intelligently than its competitors with premium features. It also has a front-mounted camera to detect hazards in real-time, although this wasn't quite foolproof in our testing and was sometimes confused by power cords or other obstructions.

For families with busy schedules recharge functions and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to continue from where it left off could be extremely useful.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is more advanced than the price suggests. It's a pro at cleaning, removing 55% of the debris that was found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using one pad and a reciprocating motion that is more efficient than most mop cleaners for robots that vacuum and mop that we've tested. It's also highly self-sufficient, with a fully-featured application, and a self-emptying, washable base.

The iRobot app is designed to help you navigate the mapping process, which gathers information on your floorplan, as well as any "no go" areas that you've marked on the map. It can be used to design cleaning schedules or to create a spot-clean. It can also be used to it to prioritize the most soiled areas to improve performance.
